Two ways to buy

Made to your measurements, or finished and folded today

A made-to-measure coat starts with one hour at the bench and a cloth off the shelf behind it. We cut a paper pattern to your figure, baste it, fit it once, and send the coat seven to nine weeks later. Nothing is graded from a block.

The ready pieces are cut in six sizes from the same cloths and sit in the drawer under the window. If one of them fits you nearly, we alter it free within the first month — sleeves, hem and waist.

“A coat is a flat thing until the day somebody puts their arms in it. Everything we do on the bench is an argument about what happens on that day.”

Before you order

What does delivery cost, and when does it come?

Ready-to-wear goes out on a tracked 48-hour service: £5.50 in the UK, free over £150, two working days. Europe is £18 and five to eight days. A made-to-measure coat is delivered free wherever you are, because the cloth and the hours already cost more than the carriage.

How long do I have to send something back?

Thirty days on anything ready to wear, unworn, with the ticket still on. We pay the return postage and refund within a week of the parcel reaching Hexham. A made-to-measure coat is cut to one person and cannot be returned, which is exactly why there is a fitting before we cut.

I am between two sizes. Which one?

Take the larger one on a coat and the smaller one on a jacket or a shirt. A coat is worn over a jacket and the chest measurement has to carry both; a jacket worn over a shirt does not. Every piece has its own centimetre table on its page, and the first alteration is free, so a sleeve or a hem that misses by two centimetres is not a problem.

What actually arrives in the parcel?

The garment folded in unbleached tissue inside a cotton bag, a spare horn button and a metre of the matching thread in a small envelope, the cloth card with the mill and the weight written on it, and a pre-paid return label for the ready pieces. No boxes within boxes.

Can you alter something I already own?

Yes, if it was well made to begin with. Sleeves shortened from the cuff £38, hem £30, waist taken in £45, a new lining £140. Bring it on a Thursday and we will tell you honestly whether it is worth the money before we take it on.
